Why Dota 2 Items Arrive in Minutes and CS2 Skins Take a Week
Both games follow the same Steam rules, yet the wait differs by days. The age of the seller's inventory explains the gap.
The short answer
A Dota 2 cosmetic reaches your inventory in about two minutes in most cases. The same kind of purchase on a CS2 marketplace often takes around seven days. The payment and the platform play no part in that gap. The trade protection hold on the seller's copy of the item decides it.
Steam's 7-day hold
When an item moves between Steam accounts, Valve places a 7-day trade protection hold on it at its new home. For that week the new owner can equip and use the item, but cannot trade or sell it onward.
Valve applies this on every marketplace, and no site can switch it off.
Why the two games differ
The hold works the same way in both games. The difference comes from where the item sits when you order it.
CS2 skins change hands all the time, through unboxing, trade-ups and moves between accounts. At any moment, a large share of CS2 listings belong to items still inside their own hold. The seller cannot send until that week ends, so your order waits out the remainder.
Dota 2 cosmetics move less. Many sit in the inventory of the person who first opened them, long past any hold. That seller can send at once, and the only wait left is how fast they respond.
Across live Dota 2 listings we measured in 2026, the median seller handed over an item in about 112 seconds. Across comparable CS2 listings, the average came out near seven days.
What this means when you buy
The delivery estimate on a listing reflects that seller's past trades. A seller who sends in ninety seconds on a typical day can still be asleep when you order.
A long estimate on a CS2 item points to an item mid-hold, which is ordinary.
You can request a refund at any point before the item arrives, which protects you from a seller who goes quiet.
After it arrives
Your new item starts a fresh 7-day hold when it lands. You can use it straight away, and you can trade it again a week later. If you plan to resell, build that week into the plan.
